Part 2: Reversing Diabetes Is Possible
Part 2: Reversing Diabetes Is Possible
Part 2 of the "Diabetes is Beatable" series of four parts is here. Today, we will be discussing Chromium.
The human body cannot function properly without the trace mineral chromium. Chromium GTF (Glucose Tolerance Factor) is the name given to the chromium that is naturally occurring in food. The National Institute of Health reports that chromium aids in the regulation of blood sugar levels.
Furthermore, according to experts, Chromium GTF can:Cut down on blood fat levels Maintain healthy blood cholesterol levelsRaise good cholesterol levels Tease out the arteriesPromote synthesis of critical neurotransmittersFortify the body's defenses against diseaseGenerate more proteinsUse the brain's "satiety center" to numb feelings of hunger. The annual sales of chromium-based supplements are around $100 million, according to the US Federal Trade Commission. Most chromium products are chelates, which are mineral salts that have been bound to another substance.
One molecule of chromium is connected to three molecules of picolinate to form chromium picolinate, a chelate.
While some studies have shown health benefits from chromium picolinate, the results of many others have been inconclusive. Picolinates may be absorbed, but the minerals were not efficiently digested or taken into the tissues, according to research on chromium metabolism. Its general safety has been called into question in recent papers.
Keep in mind that Thomas
Northwestern University's O'Halloran found that proteins serve as a "chauffeur" to help move minerals to their intended areas. Research on the protein signaling system, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1999, formed the basis of this groundbreaking scientific work.
In 2000, an essay from the University of Alabama's Department of Chemistry was published by the American Society for Nutritional Sciences. "The Biochemistry of Chromium" delves into the function of chromium in glucose metabolism. Although "Chromium from the popular dietary supplement Chromium Picolinate enters cells via a different mechanism," the author cautions that the metabolism of Chromium Picolinate can generate harmful free radicals and explains the unique metal transport protein (protein chauffeur) present in dietary chromium.
The benefits of FoodMatrix Chromium and Chromium Picolinate on glucose reduction were examined in a study published in Nutritional Reports International. This published study indicated that compared to the chelated nutrient, the FoodMatrix nutrient reduced patients' blood sugar levels nearly three times more effectively.
Diabetes is the official publication of the American Diabetes Association. In a separate trial, researchers observed that FoodMatrix Chromium helped older diabetics control their blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
Some recent alarming findings (including the study from the University of Alabama) have led the University of California at Berkeley Wellness Letter to advise consumers not to take Chromium Picolinate.
We will talk about the benefits of exercise for diabetics tomorrow.
